Cathlamet Parks and Recreation Facilities

Erickson Park is a ten-acre park located on Columbia Street in Cathlamet. The park property was purchased from Ed Erickson in 1947. With assistance from state and federal grants and many volunteer hours, the town has redeveloped the park in to a facility that is used by many people. It includes restrooms, a covered shelter area, a tennis court, basketball hoops, horseshoe pits, playground equipment and nature paths. A skateboard park built by volunteers is expected to be completed in the near future to provide another source of recreation for local youth.

Strong Park is comprised of two-acres on the Cathlamet waterfront adjacent to the Wahkiakum County Museum. The park contains a historical locomotive and mural, picnic tables and benches, and a Master Gardeners "Butterfly Garden". There is a lighted waterfront trail leading from the park to the Elochoman Slough marina and Cathlamet beachfront. The trail crosses over Birnie Creek and the Cathlamet FFA fish-rearing project.

The Wahkiakum County Museum is operated by the Wahkiakum County Historical Society and contains a unique variety of historical artifacts and donated private collections. There is an assortment of old photographs depicting the history of Cathlamet and Wahkiakum County, which are available for viewing, and copies of the photos may be also be purchased. Outside the museum you will find various pieces of old logging and fishing equipment on display. While the exterior of this museum appears small, the wealth of history it contains is enormous and is well worth the visit!

The Blanche Bradley Memorial Library is located above the Town Hall on Main Street. The library has a great assortment of books for all readers as well as movies and books on cassette for lending. Due to a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the library also has several computers with Internet access for public use. The library offers a Summer Reading program for children and holds several book sales throughout the year. The library is also used for Cathlamet Planning Commission meetings.

The Julia Butler Hansen Municipal Swimming Pool is open from June to September for families to escape the heat in a safe, fun way! The pool was built in 1973 and 1974 with assistance from a grant from the Interagency Committee for Outdoor Recreation. The pool offers swimming and water aerobic classes and lap swimming, and features a children's wading pool. The pool was named in honor of former Congresswoman Julia Butler Hansen who was also a Cathlamet resident.

Port District #1 operates the Elochoman Slough Marina, which offers boaters a clean, well-designed and convenient access to the Columbia River. The Marina offers RV spaces and overnight cabins for rent, a laundry area and fish cleaning station and hosts the annual Wooden Boat Festival in July. The annual fireworks display during Bald Eagle Fest is also held at the Marina.
