The Wahkiakum Youth Mentoring Program’s mission is to strengthen youth connections to our local community by providing opportunities through adult support and community involvement. Our goal is to build healthy minded, confident skilled young leaders.

Connection to others and to our community is essential for healthy youth and families. Mentoring programs provide opportunities for youth to gain new skills and interests outside of school and seek guidance from adults besides their parents and teachers. Our mentoring program includes group activities, which connects youth with their community as a whole and open doors to more possibilities.

This program is coordinated by Wahkiakum County Health and Human Services and The Wahkiakum Community Network. The program is funded by the Washington State Health Care Authority.

Adult volunteers are matched with youth mentees to support their learning in topics that interest them. Some of the topics include forestry, health and nutrition, leadership, civic engagement, and life skills. Each adult is paired with one youth mentee. Mentoring takes place four hours each month.

What are the requirements?

For Adult Mentors, the following is required:

  • Complete an application
  • Pass a reference check and a national background check
  • Attend approximately 4 hours of training on child safety and best practices for providing mentoring
  • Commitment to connect four hours per month with mentees for one year

How does it work?

Registered youth in grades K-12 are matched with an adult volunteer who will guide them through fun monthly activities and provide them with support. Youth meet with their mentors for approximately 4 hours per month. Mentors, mentees, and parents/guardians are invited to monthly group activities to have fun and build community!

What do we need?

In order to participate, families need to complete the registration form. Families are asked to commit to supporting their youth in being on time to meetings with their mentor and communicate at least monthly with program directors. Spots are limited, and youth may be put on a waiting list.
